Open-Loop Geothermal Systems
An open-loop geothermal system typically uses two water wells: a supply well and a return well.
Groundwater is pumped from the supply well and circulated through the geothermal heat pump, where energy is exchanged to help heat or cool the building. The water is then returned underground through a return well.
Depending on the design of the system and applicable permitting requirements, the supply well may also be capable of providing water for other uses, such as irrigation or domestic water supply.
Closed-Loop Geothermal Systems
A closed-loop geothermal system circulates a water-based solution through a series of underground pipes rather than pumping groundwater from an aquifer.
For vertical closed-loop systems, boreholes are drilled into the ground and geothermal piping is installed within each borehole. The closed system then circulates fluid through the underground loops, allowing heat to be transferred between the building and the surrounding earth.
During warmer months, the system transfers heat from the building into the ground. During cooler months, the process is reversed, allowing the system to use heat stored within the earth to help warm the building.
